Hello!

And welcome!  I'm Caleb, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina and creator of Gravel Therapy™.

My Background

Whether biking on a trail, climbing a new route, or kayaking a familiar rapid, movement facilitates a wordless hearing that cannot be replicated by staying still inside an office. Deep conversations shared with others moving in outdoor spaces have been some of the most transformational experiences in my life.  After working in outdoor education for over twenty years, I find that I can better listen to the longings of the human heart and map the fixations of the mind, of my own and that of others, when my body is moving outside.

I have over fourteen years of counseling experience, both in community settings and in private practice.  While I am new to coaching and MTB skills instruction, I have over twenty-five years of cycling experience and have served nearly twenty years as an instructor for Outward Bound.  I have also competed in regional mountain bike and ultra-endurance events.  While my practice is not specifically focused on serving racers and experienced cyclists, I love to support outdoor athletes of all abilities who glean therapeutic benefits from their time in the natural world.

I am at my best when I am biking in the mountains of Western NC, boating whitewater, rock climbing, running and hiking with my family, playing with my dog and co-therapist Mae, and crafting a poem or essay.

Education

I received a Master of Arts and a Master of Divinity from Wake Forest University. My education was shaped thereafter by a multitude of professional experiences in mental health settings where I grew as a therapist in both leadership and followership roles.  My practice has been enriched by subsequent training, peer consultation, and/or supervision in SIP, the Enneagram, EMDR, Hakomi, Internal Family Systems, Emotionally Focused Therapy, MI, and CBT.

License & Certificates

I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina (#10271), a Certified Spirituality Integrated Psychotherapist (C-SIP) with ACPE, and a National Certified Counselor (NCC #321727) with the National Board for Certified Counselors.  I am also a Level 3 Coach with USA Cycling (#667659), a BICP Level I MTB Skills Instructor, Ride Leader, and a Wilderness First Responder.

Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy

You might have noticed that I use emotionally resonant and openly reverent language to describe my experiences in the natural world.  That is because I am a spiritual and religious person, and I am trained in spiritually integrated psychotherapy (SIP).  If you are interested in learning more about this model of soul care and approach to cultivating ecological wellbeing, please visit my SIP page below:
